Content Management System
The acronym CMS stands for Content Management System. A Content Management System is a tool to control the content of e.g. a website. In theory, you, as the owner of the site, should have no need for technical knowledge in order to be able to maintain the content of your site (you may rather want to focus on content than on technique of course). Unfortunately this is often misunderstood, as you do need certain knowledge to control the engine that runs your website.
Content Management Systems come in a great variety. From very small, simple and mostly free of charge, to very large and professional, usually “paid-for” systems. A site that compares a number of these systems can be found at cmsoverzicht, which is being maintained by Footsteps.
Some of the most popular open-source CMS-es are WorPress, Joomla and Drupal. Most of these systems are maintained and supported by a large group of enthusiastic volunteers and new releases are distributed regularly. The majority of these open-source projects are free of charge, however, contributions are warmly welcomed of course. Also, most of the extensions can be used freely or can be licensed for small amounts.
Though not all web-hosting environments are equally well equipped for hosting all of these systems, most of them support at least some of them.
WideAwake Webdesign is specialized in Joomla-implementations. Joomla is very widespread and tens - or more likely hundreds - of thousands of websites all over the world use Joomla as their engine. Specialization on other CMS-es is likely to happen in the near future.
